Chatstaff is a chat-based virtual reference backup service, currently serving hundreds of public and academic libraries. All librarians deal with all client libraries, and are expected to be able to efficiently find information to answer questions about local services and to be able to help with online research and general reference questions. Librarians are also expected to be able to juggle chats well, regularly handling two or more simultaneously without sacrificing quality. This is a very fast-paced environment, requiring quick thinking and sharp observation in addition to strong reference and research skills.

Candidates must possess an ALA-accredited master's degree and have experience in a reference environment. Excellent attention to detail is a must with the ability to juggle multiple simultaneous chats and searches. You must be available to work at least 10 hours a week (up to 30 hours) and staff at least 4 hours every weekend. You must have a stable high-speed internet connection, a cell phone and a desk or laptop computer. We cannot staff with mobile devices.
