Chatstaff is a chat-based virtual reference backup service, currently serving hundreds of public and academic libraries. All librarians deal with all client libraries, and are expected to be able to efficiently find information to answer questions about local services and to be able to help with online research and general reference questions. Librarians are also expected to be able to juggle chats well, regularly handling two or more simultaneously without sacrificing quality. This is a very fast-paced environment, requiring quick thinking and sharp observation in addition to strong reference and research skills.

Candidates must possess an ALA-accredited master's degree and have experience in a reference environment. Excellent attention to detail is a must with the ability to juggle multiple simultaneous chats and searches. You must be available to work at least 10 hours a week (up to 30 hours) and staff at least 4 hours every weekend. You must have a stable high-speed internet connection, a cell phone and a desk or laptop computer. We cannot staff with mobile devices.

We do keep your application on file. If you have any schedule changes, please update your application as your new availability may fit with a current hours need.

This application is essentially your first interview. If you would not stay silent or give a one-word answer if someone asked you these questions aloud, don't do it here.

Chatstaff provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment. We do not discriminate or tolerate workplace harassment on any basis, including but not limited to race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, creed, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, medical condition, disability, genetics, uniformed service, veteran status, and age.

All federal, state, and local EEO/harassment laws in any place we have an employee apply to everyone employed by or applying to Chatstaff, regardless of their location. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation and training.
